LOCAL VETERAN OWNED COMPANY LAUNCHES ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN TO HELP MILITARY MEMBERS AFFORD HOUSING AT FORT STEWART AND HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD

HINESVILLE, GA – NOVEMBER 10, 2022 With Veterans Day approaching, a local veteran owned company is launching an advocacy campaign to raise awareness of the housing crisis and seek emergency funding from the Department of Defense for active military families at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield.

American Veteran Properties is not profiting from this advocacy campaign but is extremely concerned about the discrepancy between Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) in Hinesville and the cost of housing for families. Every day, more military families at Fort Stewart are living in RVs or hotels or expensive short-term rentals, doubling up with two families living in single family homes and struggling to make ends meet. This advocacy campaign is being launched to help our troops afford local housing through increasing their BAH to appropriate levels through contacting Congressman Buddy Carter or their Home of Record Congressperson.

The statistics reveal why low BAH rates at Fort Stewart personally affect the military community. The recent inflation of the housing market means that the cost of homes for sale and rental prices have skyrocketed. This means that average rental prices in Hinesville, GA are now just under $1,800 a month and the average mortgage on a small home is $2,100. A Corporal at Fort Stewart (E4) has a BAH of $1,491 a month making it nearly impossible to find affordable housing. While the soldiers are given access to on post housing, the list to receive a home on post is so long that military families are having to find other places to live. A Colonel at Fort Stewart (06) has a basic housing allowance of $2,232 a month meaning that it is almost impossible for them to find affordable family housing commensurate with their rank. By comparison, military families in Beaufort, South Carolina, which is home to the Marine Air Station (MCAS) and was one of the 28 military bases across the USA awarded the BAH emergency increase last month, is in a much better position. Residential housing rates are similar to Hinesville but an E4 receives $2,172 and an 06 receives $3,336. More information about BAH rates can be found https://www.travel.dod.mil/

LAUNCH OF NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION BUDDYWATCH, INC. TO PROVIDE VETERAN HOUSING

MIDWAY, GA – NOVEMBER 9, 2022 – Today, a new nonprofit organization, BuddyWatch, Inc., has been launched to provide housing for veterans in Coastal Georgia in time for Veteran’s Day. Small (800 ft2) cottages will be built on five acres of land, which has been donated by BuddyWatch, Inc.’s founder Jo Coleman-Williams, and designated as the “Polaris” community which will provide housing to homeless veterans in our region. The future site of “Polaris” is located at 862 South Coastal Hwy, Midway, GA. A ribbon cutting will take place at the site later this year.  

“We are excited to announce our housing plan just in time for Veteran’s Day,” said Coleman-Williams. “Affordable housing in this region is already a problem for everyone, and it’s increasingly difficult for veterans who have come back from deployment with no home and limited resources.”

Coleman-Williams is a licensed therapist and plans to help veterans in need, physically and mentally. One acre of land will be used for a new therapy office space and the other four acres will remain available for tiny houses to be built. Each house will be handicap accessible and available to a veteran in need. To raise much needed funds to support the new “Polaris” community, BuddyWatch, Inc. has produced and is selling unique bird feeders, which can be purchased for $79 plus shipping and handling.

The goal of BuddyWatch is to act as a safe haven community for soldiers who have returned home and are struggling to acclimate to civilian life. It will act as a gateway between military and civilian life. Veterans may stay as long as they need to develop their civilian skills and acclimate to civilian life.

FALLEN HEROES’ FAMILIES AHEAD OF THANKSGIVING

HSF’S “PEOPLE, PLACES AND STORIES” LECTURE SERIES WELCOMES DR. CHRISTOPHER HENDRICKS – NOV. 17

SAVANNAH, GA – November 4, 2022 – Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF) will host Dr. Christopher Hendricks, local Savannah historian and co-author of “Old Southern Cookery: Mary Randolph’s Recipes from America’s First Regional Cookbook Adapted for Today’s Kitchen”, as the next presenter in their “People, Places and Stories that Define Savannah” lecture series. His presentation is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 17 at the Murray C. Perlman & Wayne C. Spear Preservation Center located at 323 East Broughton Street.

Dr. Christopher Hendricks and his mother, Sue Hendricks, put a new spin on time-tested recipes from Mary Randolph’s famed 1824 bestselling cookbook, “The Virginia House-Wife” for their book, “Old Southern Cookery: Mary Randolph’s Recipes from America’s First Regional Cookbook Adapted for Today’s Kitchen.” Join HSF as Dr. Hendricks shares how they chose the best of the original early 19th century recipes to show how home cooks can use contemporary methods and ingredients to prepare delicious dishes. Dr. Hendricks will be signing copies of Old Southern Cookery the evening of the lecture – the book will be available for purchase at the Davenport House Museum Shop. All proceeds from the sale of Old Southern Cookery will be donated to Historic Savannah Foundation and the Davenport House to support their mission.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Hendricks back at HSF to discuss this beloved cookbook that he created with his mother,” HSF Education and Research Associate, Kimberly Newbold said. “This cookbook gives a peek into what recipes were made in the past and how we can adapt them to the modern kitchen of today.”

FAMILY PROMISE OF THE COASTAL EMPIRE RECEIVES $300,000 DONATION FROM KIA AMERICA

BRYAN COUNTY, GA – November 3, 2022 – Kia America announced a $300,000 donation to Family Promise of the Coastal Empire as part of the recent groundbreaking celebrations for the new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant.  

Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung, along with Governor Brian Kemp, company officials, and state and local leaders, officially broke ground at the Bryan County Mega site on Oct. 25, 2022. The celebration included a morning groundbreaking on site, followed by a future technology expo at Enmarket Arena in Savannah. During this exhibit, Family Promise of the Coastal Empire CEO Katrina Bostick and Board Chair Jason Crosby were honored to accept the $300,000 donation from Kia America Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President Steve Center.

Family Promise will soon have a physical presence in Bryan County, thanks to this generous donation from Kia America. Kia’s contribution will help Family Promise purchase a new house in Pembroke that will be used as a “home base” for helping homeless families with children find employment and other assistance.

“We are in the early stages of this project, so there is currently not a timeline for when the home will open, but we have started scouting locations,” said Bostick. “It’s important to us that we take some time to get input from community members in the Pembroke and Ellabell areas on what their specific needs are before allocating these valuable funds.”

Hyundai Motor Group will open its first fully dedicated electric vehicle and battery manufacturing facility in Bryan County. Hyundai Motor Group will invest $5.45 billion in opening its first state-of-the-art U.S. smart factory. This donation is the latest extension of Kia’s “Accelerate The Good” charitable initiative, which has provided more than $14 million to those in need across the U.S. since 2019.

HSF WELCOMES NEW YORK EXPERTS FROM ‘HINGE NEIGHBORS’ AT NOV. 1 ANNUAL MEETING

SAVANNAH, GA. – OCT. 27, 2022 – Historic Savannah Foundation is hosting its annual meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Savannah Repertory Theatre located at 402 East Broughton St. The evening’s speakers, Suzanne Mayer and Shawn Dunwoody from Hinge Neighbors, will speak about their efforts to reconnect the neighborhoods long separated by the Inner Loop North in Rochester, New York.

This event, which is free and open to the public, includes important updates about Historic Savannah Foundation as CEO and President Sue Adler and HSF Board Chair Austin Hill deliver the annual report, announce the election of new Board of Trustees members and officers, and recognize outgoing Board members. The annual meeting is designed to highlight HSF’s work and initiatives throughout the previous year, and acknowledge and thank HSF members and the community for their continued support of the foundation.  A light reception with refreshments in the Murray C. SAVANNAH CLASSICAL ACADEMY RECEIVES HIGHEST ACCREDITATION SCORES FROM GEORGIA COMMISSION

SAVANNAH, GA – Oct. 27, 2022 – Savannah Classical Academy (SCA) has been awarded the highest possible rating by the Georgia Accrediting Commission (GAC). This independent inspection and review of schools takes place every five years and SCA was ‘accredited with quality’ in the elementary, middle and high schools. The GAC commented, “SCA is a great investment and continues to be good stewards of Chatham County’s taxpayer dollars by delivering excellence both in the classroom and our community.”

SCA is a K-12 charter school which recently reported excellent results in the Georgia Department of Education’s 2022 Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS) scores. These assessments measure student proficiency in grades 3rd through 8th grades in a range of disciplines including math, reading, English language arts, science, and social studies. For 2022, SCA students outscored Savannah Chatham County Public School System students on all twenty-three common state assessments (GMAS) and achieved parity or superior achievement when compared to all students in Georgia in all but six assessments.

The GAC gave SCA these impressive scores because of the holistic nature of education provided to students in addition to academic success. Impressive culinary programs, community collaboration, field trips, the range and quality of extra-curricular activities to all grades, professional development, a supportive environment, and promotion of good behaviors were all noted.

The City of Port Wentworth will once again serve as Presenting Sponsor for this annual free event. This highly anticipated community festival will feature a variety of food vendors, beer/wine, kid’s activities, live entertainment, a salute to our veterans, and of course, fresh oysters by the bucket! This year’s festival will also include the new addition of a fireworks show at dark.

“This is by far one of the largest events we host every year, and it continues to grow,” said Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Vice Chair Vicki Waters. “We’re expecting over 4,000 people to attend this year, so we’ve added more vendors and an exciting firework show once the sun goes down. We welcome everyone to join us and enjoy a good time with the members of your community!”

Tickets are not required to attend this event. Food, beverages, and souvenirs will be available for purchase through individual vendors. It is recommended that children wear socks and close toed shoes to participate in the Kids Zone activities and bring ear plugs for the nighttime firework show. Well behaved, leashed pets are welcome to attend this event.
