SAVANNAH, GA – August 26, 2025 –The Savannah African Art Museum (SAAM) is calling on the public to participate in its virtual exhibit, “Telling Your Story.” This special project invites community members to share personal or ancestral stories through images, writing, or video, preserving and sharing untold stories acknowledging the depth of the African American experience.
Inspired by the Adinkra symbol “Sankofa” of the Akan people of Ghana meaning, “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what is at risk of being left behind,” or simply, “go back and fetch it!” They believe there is wisdom in learning from the past which ensures a strong future. This digital exhibit offers a platform for contributors to highlight stories—whether triumphant, challenging, inspirational, victorious or perhaps personal that deserves to be heard. By contributing to “Telling Your Story”, participants help build a growing archive of cultural memory and collective wisdom that honors the past while embracing the future.
“This exhibit is not just about storytelling; it’s about reclaiming, honoring, celebrating, and healing through memory,” said Lisa Jackson, the Museum’s Education and Community Outreach Liaison. “We created ‘Telling Your Story’ as an opportunity to connect generations and people through the shared power of narrative. Everyone has a story that matters—We want to hear from individuals, churches, fraternities/sororities, organizations, publications, etc. You all have a story that matters – this is your invitation to share it.”
Participants are encouraged to submit stories in one of the following formats:
- Written word (max 500 words) as a scanned image or document (JPEG, PNG, PDF)
